Fires and smoke south of Krasnoyarsk and near Irkutsk, Russia

This image of south-central Russia on May 29, 2002, was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite. At right, heavy smoke hangs over Lake Baikal and the Angara River, which drains from the southwest of the lake and flows north. At the lower left, numerous fires (red dots) are burning in the mountains near the Mongolia-Russia border.
