Eastern Africa

Fires (red dots) were scattered across the savannas of Sudan (left) and Ethiopia (right) in January 2003, and were detected in these images captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite. At bottom left a few fires can be seen in Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the false-color images, vegetation is bright green, naturally bare soil is pinkish tan, burn scars are reddish brown, water is dark blue or black, and clouds are light blue or white.
