Southern Argentina

Covering 2,736,690 square kilometers, Argentina is the second largest nation in South America, and has a population of over 37.8 million. In these true-color Terra MODIS images from late February 2003, the sheer extent of the country is revealed, including the rugged Andes Mountain Range in the west, the rich sub-tropical agricultural plains of the north, and the Patagonian plateau in the south. To the east are Brazil, Uruguay, and the southern Atlantic Ocean; to the west and south is Chile; and to the north are Bolivia and Paraguay. Also visible in these images are a number of fires, which are marked in red.
