Retreat of the Tasman Glacier

NIWA scientists stated that this glacier had retreated by 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) over the previous three decades. They also stated that New Zealand glaciers on the whole had lost 5.8 cubic kilometers (roughly 1.4 cubic miles) over the same time period.

This image of the Balakovo Nuclear Power Station and the Saratov Hydroelectric Power Station was captured by ASTER on January 29, 2004. Small puffs of clouds hang over the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant cooling pond. The cooling pond and the stretch of open water downriver of the dam at the Saratov Hydroelectric Station are the only places free of winter’s grip.

The images show the city of Barahona and its surroundings in the southwestern Dominican Republic. The most obvious difference between the two images is the flooding around the Laguna del Rincón.
