Huge fires are burning out of control throughout New South Wales Australia. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer image was acquired by the Aqua satellite on October 19, 2002. At the bottom of the image, a long plume of smoke wafts over the Tasman Sea from a fire in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney. A dense cluster of active fires between Sydney and Brisbane (just inland of the second small peninsula extending northward from the mainland) are billowing heavy smoke.
