This Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) image from July 12, 2003, shows the area scorched by the Aspen Fire, northeast of Tucson, Arizona. The burned area appears almost black in this false-color image, partially hidden in places by purplish smoke and clouds. The regular lines of streets in Tucson are easily seen in the bottom left quadrant of the image, while remaining vegetation on Mt. Lemmon, where the fire was burning, is colored bright green.
