The White Sea is certainly not white in this SeaWiFS image captured on June 3, 2001. This view shows that very little light is being reflected from the waters of this northern Russian sea. Most of the sea is too dark for the standard SeaWiFS processing algorithms to compute chlorophyll concentrations in the water.
