The American Heartland is on display in this true-color image acquired by MODIS on September 11, 2001. At the top of the image is Lake Michigan which borders, clockwise from top-right, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Also visible, starting at the top-left of the image and moving south, is the Mississippi River which serves as a border for many states on its way to opening into the Gulf of Mexico.
