This MODIS image from May 14, 2002, shows the marked contrasts between the high, arid Tibetan Plateau (upper left) and lush southern slopes of the Himalaya Mountains that give way to the Brahmaputra River Valley in northern India. MODIS detected several fires burning in the region, and they are marked with red dots.
