Snow is clinging to the higher elevations of the mountains of Hokkaido, Japan (lower left), in this MODIS image from May 14, 2001. Stretching northward in an arc away from Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands are covered in snow, and the Sakhalin Peninsula (upper left) is only beginning to thaw out from winter.
