Several fires were burning in the low-lying areas to the west of southeastern Russia's mountainous coastline in this MODIS image from April 27, 2002. Fires or other hot spots were also detected on the southern portion of Sakhalin Island (right). Hokkaido, Japan, is at bottom right.
