Lake Baikal in south central Russia is still choked with winter ice, but the retreating snow has left the way open for fires (red dots) to the northwest. The Angara River, which drains the lake from the southern tip, appears to be thawing in the southernmost reaches. This MODIS image was made from data collected on April 26, 2002. v
