This expansive view of southern Africa shows the countries of Angola (top) and Namibia (bottom). In Angola, the dendritic river drainage pattern criss-crosses the inland Plateau region. To the south is Namibia9s Etosha Pan, a flat, salty desert that holds water briefly throughout the course of the year, creating a haven for waterfowl and other wildlife. Its bright salty soil stands out against the surrounding terrain in this MODIS image from April 30, 2002.
