Phytoplankton bloom in the Black Sea

A phytoplankton bloom originally imaged on May 5, 2002, is still ongoing as of May 9, 2002. This true-color MODIS image shows a bloom running north-south in the western portion of the sea, and another running west-east in the southern waters. To the northeast, sediment and organic matter washed in by rivers may be responsible for the cloudy appearance of the Sea of Azov.
