Lake Balkhash, Kazakhstan

This MODIS image of southeastern Kazakhstan (top) and northern Kyrgyzstan (bottom) shows Kazakhstan9s narrow, arcing Lake Balkhash. At the western end of the lake the Ili river empties in. Farther east, the smaller Karatol comes in. To the south are the rugged, snow-laden Tien-Shan Mountains. This image was acquired by MODIS on May 5, 2002.
