The Four Corners, Southwest United States

This true-color image from May 6, 2002, shows the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States where (clockwise from upper left) Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona meet. In Colorado, the Front Range of the Rockies is free of snow, but some remains on the western slopes. In northwestern Utah, purple salt-loving bacteria thrive in the Great Salt Lake, where a railroad causeway is causing the salt levels in the northern part of the lake to rise. In southern Utah and northern Arizona, the Colorado River cuts through the salmon-colored rocks of the Colorado Plateau. A green line running almost due south through New Mexico shows the path of the Rio Grande.
