Phytoplankton bloom in the Black Sea

A large and colorful phytoplankton bloom is occurring in the Black Sea in Eastern Europe. These images were captured by MODIS on May 10 and May 11, 2002. The bloom progresses outward from the western and southern coastlines, with water closer to the shore being very dark, and lightening to a bright blue farther out. This changing color could be due to different concentrations of the marine plant organisms, or from different species, or both.
