The island of Sumatra, Indonesia, is south of Southeast Asia, with the Indian Ocean on its western coast, and the South China Sea on its eastern coast. The western coastline is dominated by mountains, and low-lying wetlands dominate the eastern coastal margin. In this image from May 16, 2002, MODIS detected several fires (red dots) burning on the island. At upper right is the island of Borneo.
