Sea ice is still insulating the northern coastline of Alaska's North Slope in this MODIS image from May 22, 2002. In northern Alaska, the towering Brooks Mountain range slopes downward to the coastline is a broad plain called the North Slope. In this image the tundra is beginning to show through the melting snow, while the mountains are still covered. South of the Brooks Range, central Alaska is greening up.
