Numerous fires are burning in eastern Russia and on Sakhalin Island (right of center), and the smoke from these fires is drifting eastward out over the Sea of Okhotsk. In the high-resolution imagery, large burn scars stand out against the unburned vegetation. This image was acquired on May 18, 2002, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.
