Borrego fire near Santa Fe, New Mexico

According to the Forest Service's Southwest Area Fire Coordination Center, the Borrego Fire, burning to the northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was slowed by more moderate weather overnight on May 27th, including snow at higher elevations. This fire began on May 22, 2002, of causes that are still under investigation, and quickly spread from a few hundred to several thousand acres in one 24-hour period. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite was acquired on May 24, 2002, and the fire is marked with a red outline. As of May 28, the fire had spread to more than 12,700 acres, and was about 50% contained.
