Southern United States

Heavy sediment from the Mississippi River, whose pale, broad alluvial plain stands out against greener vegetation left of center, is churning in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana Coast. At image right, several fires (red dots) have been detected by MODIS in Georgia, as well as south into Florida and west into Alabama. This image was acquired on May 20, 2002.
