Off the southeastern coast of Africa, smoke hangs over the Indian Ocean in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from May 20, 2002. Numerous fires (marked with red dots) were detected by MODIS in the Western Cape region (lower left) and scattered throughout the Republic of South Africa.
