On June 12, 2002, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of southwest Greenland. Along the rugged coastline, snow is retreating and exposing the bare, rocky ground. in the myriad fjords and inlets, sea ice is retreating, and highly reflective silt, finely ground soil pulverized by the weight of Greenland’s massive ice sheets and glaciers, is staining the waters brown and blue-green.
