Much of the lushness of vegetation surrounding Lake Victoria (top center) appears to have faded with the lengthening of the season. (Compare to image from June 2, 2002.) Now fires (red dots) dominate the landscape as the agricultural burning season gets underway. This image was acquired on July 9, 2002, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Terra satellite.
