Fires, smoke, and burn scars near Yakutsk, Russia

Massive wildfires were burning in eastern Russia along the Lena River (top and center) near the city of Yakutsk. The Central Siberian Plateau is shrouded by thick smoke in these images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). This series of images begins on August 12, 2002. In the false-color images, vegetation is green, burned areas are reddish brown, and smoke is light blue.
