This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from July 30, 2002, shows numerous fires (red dots) burning in Botswana (top) and Democratic Republic of South Africa (bottom). Along the right edge, smoke is thicker, and may be because fires are burning in areas of denser vegetation.
