Fires near Yakutsk, Russia

The Lena River in central Siberia is hidden beneath a veil of smoke from multiple wildfires burning around the city of Yakutsk, Russia. Fires have been burning in the region off and on since late May 2002, and may be agricultural in cause. These images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite beginning July 23, 2002, and running into mid-August.

In the false=-color images, vegetation is bright green, smoke is blueish-white, and burned areas are reddish-brown. In both images, fire detections are marked with red outlines.
