Fires in South Africa

These true- and false-color images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite show South Africa on July 27 and 29, 2002. The false-color composites enhance the contrast between scant vegetation (shown in bright green) and burned areas, which appear reddish brown. In both kinds of images, fire detections are marked with red dots. In the earlier images, snowfall is evident in the Drakensberg Mountains in the small, landlocked country of Lesotho.
