This true-color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite shows the Indonesian island of Sumatra on August 15, 2002. Numerous fires have been detected by MODIS and are marked with red dots; smoke creates a hazy blanket over the scene. The fragmentation of Sumatra’s remaining tropical forests is visible in the image as well—patches of deep green isolated from one another across the island. The lighter patches of green between the forest patches are probably agricultural land.
