These true- and false-color images of eastern and southeastern Brazil were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite on August 17, 2002. Fires are indicated by red dots. In the false-color imagery, vegetation is bright green, burned areas are reddish brown, water is dark blue or nearly black, and naturally bare soil is pinkish tan. The images span Brazil from the northeast Atlantic coast (barely visible at the top of the true- and false-color pair) to the Parana River to the south (single false-color image).
