Fires in Arizona and New Mexico

These Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from August 2002 show fires (red dots) in Arizona (bottom left) and New Mexico (bottom right). In Arizona, to the southeast of the active fires, a large reddish-brown burn scar intrudes on the dark green vegetation. This is the site of the almost 500,000-thousand-acres Rodeo-Chediski fire from earlier in the season.
