Fires and smoke in Central South America

These true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from the Terra satellite were captured in August 2002. Fires (red dots) throughout the region are blanketing central South America with a layer of smoke. The center point of the iamge varies, but in all images the following countries are visible: top left, Bolivia; top right, Brazil; center, Paraguay; and bottom, Argentina. Along the left edge of the images are the Andes Mountains.
