Fires and smoke in Russia and Belarus

This series of images from September 2002 shows thick smoke being produced by numerous fires (red dots) in western Russia (upper right quadrant) and Belarus (lower right quadrant). Countries visible, but not labaled, along the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea (left) are (from south to north) Poland, Russian Federation, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. At left is Sweden, and at top center is Finland. These images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.
