Fires in New South Wales, Australia

This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on November 7, 2002, shows numerous large fires (red dots) still burning throughout New South Wales, Australia. According to news reports, firefighters are battling the long-term drought as well as gusty winds and extreme heat in their efforts to control the blazes that are springing up throughout the territory. This image shows Sydney at the bottom of the image; the metro area appears tan amid the surrounding forested terrain.
