Fires in Paraguay and Brazil

On November 9, 2002, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of southeastern Paraguay (bottom left), Brazil (top and right), and far northeastern Argentina (bottom center). Numerous fires were detected by MODIS and marked with red dots. The Misiones region of Argentina pictured at bottom center contains some of the last remaining areas of a tropical rainforest ecosystem called the Atlantic Forest—a rainforest distinct from the Amazon farther north, and now almost completely gone. Notice how green the region appears compared the surroundings.
