These images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) show the Persian Gulf and surrounding countries: (clockwise from bottom left) Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Iran. The mesh of gray green lines running through Iraq are the wetlands and streams along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers: the Fertile Crescent. Red boxes in indicate fires or thermal signatures from gas or oil well flares.
