Southeast United States

These two Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images of the eastern United States captured on by first the Terra and then the Aqua satellite on successive days show autumn burnishing the Appalachian Mountains with its copper touch. On September 23, a winter storm hovers at the north of the image and dips into West Virginia. By the next day, the clouds were gone and a dusting of snow remained on the Allegheny Mountains in the eastern part of the state. A long, green valley known as the Shenandoah Valley stretches out to the east of the Alleghenies, all the way from Pennsylvania down into Georgia. A few scattered fires were detected by MODIS and are marked with red dots.
