Southernmost Brazil and Uruguay

These true-color MODIS images feature southernmost Brazil, South America’s largest country. On November 12, 2002, other countries shown are Paraguay (top left), Argentina (left), and Uruguay (bottom). Notice the dense green vegetation of the “peninsula” of Argentina. This is one of the few remaining tracts of the Atlantic Rainforest ecosystem which once extended up and down the eastern coast of South America and inland for hundreds of miles. On September 25, the southern tip of Paraguay (upper left corner), easternmost Argentina (just below Paraguay), and northern Uruguay (bottom center) are visible. MODIS detected a number of fires, marked in red, burning throughout the region. The large lake on the Brazilian coast is the Lagoa dos Patos, and just below it is the Lagoa Mirrim, which straddles the border between Brazil and Uruguay.
