The Strait of Magellan in southernmost Chile is featured in this true-color Terra MODIS image from September 3, 2002. The Strait of Magellan allows ocean-going vessels access to the southern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans without navigating around the southern tip of South America via the Drake Passage. Ferdinand Magellan first navigated the Strait in 1520, and is its namesake.
