Snow in Eastern United States

In this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from December 7, 2002, a broad swath of snow cuts across the central U.S., the Mid-Atlantic, and dips down into the higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains as far south as North Carolina. The snow highlights New York’s long, narrow Finger Lakes ( upper right); the Susquehanna River meandering through the ridge and valley province of Pennsylvania and out into the Chesapeake Bay (right of center); and the rugged mountains of eastern West Virginia (center).

In the false-color image, snow is red, snow-free terrain is green or greenish blue, water is black, and clouds are white.
