Southeast United States

The southern United States stand out from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from November 29, 2002. A translucent veil of high-level clouds sweeps across the upper and left sides of the image, specifically the states of (upper left, then down) Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana. Scattered throughout the image are tiny red dots, which represent locations at which MODIS detected a temperature signature high enough to indicate a fire.
