The southeastern tip of the United States is featured in this true-color Terra MODIS image from December 16, 2002. The state of Florida is shown in entirety, while a number of other states and the Bahamas are shown only in part. The states are (moving west to east) are Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. On Florida’s western side is the Gulf of Mexico, to the south are the Straits of Florida (which separate it from Cuba), and to the east is the Atlantic Ocean. The large lake in southern Florida is Lake Okeechobee, and covering the southern tip of peninsula is the Everglades National Park, the only subtropical preserve in North America. The Everglades is a biologically diverse preserve where alligators, crocodiles, many species of birds, and both temperate and tropical plant communities exist together. It has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
