The winter freeze of the northern portions of the Caspian Sea is shown in this series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from December 2002. At left is Russia, at right is Kazakhstan. The river flowing into the Caspian from the northwest is the Volga River.
