A dense bank of fog settled into the valley region of California on January 17, 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image shows snow lying heavily on the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east, while the layer of fog gives the false impression of record snow fall in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. At bottom right, a lone fire has been detected on the outskirts of Los Angeles.
