Fires in eastern India

This true-colorAqua MODIS image from January 18, 2003, features fires in northeasternIndia, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The fires, which are marked inred, are mostly small, but the fires in northeastern India along theMyanmar border (upper right) show visible blue-gray smoke-plumes.

Also visible is the Mouths of the Ganges in India and Bangladesh onthe Bay of Bengal, in the lower left corner of the image. The Mouths of the Ganges is a collection of outlets for the waters of theGanges, Brahmaputra, and other, smaller rivers. Sediment from the riversis carried into the Bay along with the river water, which turns the Baywater brown and green.

Six countries can be seen in this image: Nepal (upper left edge),China (top), India (left edge), Bhutan (just below China), Bangladesh(left), and Myanmar (right). India, besides being on the left side of theimage, also occupies the center of this image, in between Bangladesh andMyanmar.
