On April 7, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite detected dozens of fires (marked with red dots) burning in Paraguay (right) and Argentina (left). White puffs of smoke are associated with many of the fires. At bottom, left of center, the muddy waters of the Paraná River stand out against the green vegetation of the Pampas.
