Summer is fire season all across the Northern Hemisphere. Scores of fires (marked in red) were burning across eastern Siberia on July 22, 2003, and were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on the Terra satellite. Images from recent days have shown plumes of smoke from these fires stretching across the Bering Sea (right) and reaching Alaska.
