This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite on August 7, 2003, shows fires (red dots) spread across eastern Africa. At top left is Democratic Republic of Congo, while to the south are (left to right) Angola, Zambia, and Malawi. The long, narrow lake in image center is Lake Tanganyika, with Tanzania to its east. Lake Victoria is at upper right. North of Lake Tanganyika are Burundi and Rwanda.
