The first snow of the season dusts the peaks of Colorado's Rocky Mountains in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image captured by NASA's Terra satellite on September 14, 2003. The state's capitol, Denver, is the grey patch just east of the northern mountains. The light green square above the city is the Rocky Mountain National Park, a scenic wilderness area popular with hikers and cross-country skiers. Active fire detections in southern Colorado are indicated by red dots.
